“The prevailing theme in my current body of work deals with absence and presence, subject and object and their transformation through performance. I use elements such as concentration, breath, tension and duration to reflect this research in my oeuvre.
Knitting, installation, video and sound are some of the mediums I have used to record my current investigations.”
Lerato Shadi completed a BFA from the University of Johannesburg. She was ‘a featured artist’ in ART SOUTH AFRICA MAGAZINE in 2008, and she was included in the ‘Younger Than Jesus’ artists-directory published by the NEW MUSEUM, New York in 2009. From 2010 to 2012 Shadi was a member of the BAG FACTORY artist studios in Fordsburg, Johannesburg. She was awarded a PRO HELVETIA residency in Switzerland (Berne at PROGR) in 2010. In the same year she had her solo exhibition ‘Mosako Wa Seipone’ at GOETHE ON MAIN in Johannesburg. In 2012 her work was featured at the DAK’ART biennale in Senegal and in the III MOSCOW INTERNATIONAL BIENNALE. She is currently doing her MFA at the Kunsthochschule Berlin Weissensee.
