Lens of a young Person
when demonstrations started in Mid March 2011 throughout Syria, a group of friends in Homs took their cameras to photograph the unprecedented marches and protests in their city. the closely following turn towards violence and destructions in their neighborhoods and surrounding villages was documented by these young people ever since. claiming that they are not professionals but volunteers, their activities are met with an enormous demand by e.g. residents who flee their homes, ask the photographers to send/post updates of the places left behind.
quickly, the idea of some friends turned into an ongoing project to memorize a revolution, places and people’s lives through their lens. also, landscapes, localities and monuments are posted that trigger waves of nostalgia and collective memory.
the decision was made not to mark the copyright with the individual name of the photographer for security reasons. at the same time this approach emphasizes that the view is the view of everyone. the image, representing a place, a moment, belongs to anybody from this place, creating a sense of identification.
a logo was designed which is placed in a corner of every photograph, showing a stylized person with a camera, the new flag of Syria, and the name of the place: Lens of a young person from Homs, Aleppo etc. the captions are kept simple: the name of the place, the date of the upload plus the date when the picture was taken: today, yesterday, a long while ago etc.
people in other cities and town in Syria adopted this concept. their specific sites serve as a platform documenting news on the obvious rapid changes, the battles, the losses, routine - spaces of social cohesion and memory.
the pictures chosen here do not show the very gruesome side of daily live in Syria. the pictures selected depict moments of an apparent calm, while images of violence and destruction run in the back of our heads.
