Al Kheimah—The Tent
Hanan Khalil and Samah Hijawi
The two Jordanian artists Hanan Khalil and Samah Hijjawi worked on the duality of fate and wish/desire.
Naseeb – Fate
Ya rait – I wish
Buying lottery tickets people are on mercy of yet another force.
During the first part of their work, the two artists offered white empty paper in the same seize as the usual lottery tickets and asked people to write their wishes and dreams. Some of the people were being photographed with a Polaroid camera. This action drew a lot of attention to people in the streets of Downtown public market area, where it took place over two successive afternoons.
The third day, the artists put up a tent on one of the busy main roads in Downtown, next to the Roman Theatre and displayed all the papers with wishes and dreams of the people, accompanied by the Polaroid photographs.
People were streaming the tent, curious to read what other people wished for and to express their own wishes.
The tent has a lot of connotations: it stands for the nomadic and Bedouin life, camping holidays and the temporary yet continuous home of many refugees. In an urban context a tent appears to be out of place, but in Arab countries, like Jordan and Egypt, tents are erected in the cities to hold wedding and funeral ceremonies.
