Naeem Mohaiemen is an artist working in Dhaka/New York. He uses text, video, and archives to explore historical markers. Areas of exploration include failed revolutionary movements, globally interlinked national security panic, and the slippage between utopia and dystopia.
Naeem also works on activist projects in Bangladesh. He writes the chapter on religious and ethnic minorities in the Ain Salish Kendro Annual Human Rights report (askbd.org). Working between two countries, this work delineates the contradictions between Bengalis in marginal migrant status in Northern countries, and majoritarian (and authoritarian) status inside Bangladesh. As part of this work, «Muslims or Heretics: My Camera Can Lie» was screened for an ancillary meeting of European Human Rights Commission at the UK House of Lords.
Naeem co-founded Visible Collective, a coalition of New York artist-activists doing a 3-year investigation of post 9/11 hysteria (2004-2006; one video shown at Whitney Biennial as part of «Wrong Gallery»). Naeem is a recipient of the 2008 Creative Capital grant for his ongoing research on failed revolutions.
