Al Maq’ad—The Bench
Pascal Hachem
Rayelle Niemann
The Square de Paris is a gift by the French to the Amman Municipality, Luweibdeh district. The streetlamps, the benches, the wood of the benches, the sculpture, the fence, the telephone booth and advertisement column, all was imported from France in 2004 – a little Paris in Amman.
Yet, the maintenance of the square is not carried out, neither by the French - the French Cultural Centre is in close proximity - nor by the Amman Municipality.
Three benches are missing and the other benches are in a rather poor condition: people could only sit on the back, as the sitting pales were broken or missing.
The square serves as a gathering and meeting place for locals, Iraqi refugees, visitors (to a nearby hospital) from Yemen and their children.
During spring and summer time, the square is very crowded. Our accommodation was right across the square and we could witness various activities at different times, day and night and we got to know the people.
The artists constructed a 4meter long bench from local wood and repaired the broken benches with the pales they took from the other bench.
