Ez-zahr—The Dice
Emrany/Köppl/Zacek
Placed on the Square de Paris, the dice indicates three geographical locations: Paris, giving the new name to the square, Amman, the actual location of the square, and Baghdad. Three capitals oddly assorted in this square.
In Luweibdeh, where the square is located in Amman, one will find a lot of Iraqi refugees, either waiting for a visa to be able to settle in e.g. Canada, Sweden, US, or as residents of Jordan or with an illegal status.
The dice is a playful way to address rather serious issues, as people cannot gamble for the destination of their choice. Yet, sometimes it feels like it – one is just a plaything in a huge uncontrollable game with constantly changing rules. The kids and the young men appreciated this new and unexpected toy, unimpressed by the seriousness of the writings.
